CivicKind Technologies combines social research, human-centred design and technology to build digital solutions for the challenges that matter to South Africa.
Why CivicKind
CivicKind was founded in response to a problem we observed in South African technology development: many digital products are technically functional, but are not sufficiently designed around the people expected to use them.
Before building technology, we want to understand the people, environments and problems involved. Our products are informed by interviews, ethnographic research, community engagement and direct interaction with intended users.
The objective is not simply to build technology that works. It is to build technology that works for people.

CivicKind Technologies was founded in 2025 with a simple belief: technology can do more than automate processes. It can help people navigate social, civic and professional challenges when it is designed with a genuine understanding of their realities.
We are particularly interested in technologies that strengthen communities, improve access to information, increase accountability and help people navigate their everyday lives.
Meet the founder
Founder & CEO, CivicKind Technologies
Sipho Mackenzie is a social anthropologist, technology practitioner and social entrepreneur working at the intersection of technology, research and social justice.
His work explores how technology can respond to real social problems while remaining grounded in the experiences of the people it is designed to serve.
At CivicKind, he brings together anthropological research, digital learning experience design, community engagement and technology development to build practical solutions for South African contexts.
What we do
Five practices that run together on every engagement: research informs design, design informs what gets built, and what gets built goes back to the people it is for.
We design and develop digital applications built around real user needs and specific social or organisational challenges.
We help organisations transform ideas into useful, accessible digital products through research, prototyping, testing and iterative design.
We conduct qualitative research, interviews, ethnography and community-based research to understand the people and contexts behind complex problems.
We support organisations moving systems and services into modern digital environments while keeping usability and organisational needs at the centre.
We work with organisations, institutions and emerging innovators to turn complex social or organisational problems into practical technology opportunities.

Our flagship platform
SafeClub is a community-powered nightlife safety platform designed to help womxn navigate nightlife with better safety information while contributing to greater accountability across the nightlife ecosystem.
The platform addresses gender-based violence in nightlife environments by connecting community experiences, safety information and institutional accountability.
Partners & support
CivicKind Technologies is currently supported through the Technology Innovation Agency's Grassroots Innovation Programme, under the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation.
CivicKind Technologies has engaged through LGSETA's China–South Africa Government Industry Consortium, providing exposure to international innovation ecosystems and opportunities to explore how global technology and entrepreneurship practices can inform locally relevant solutions in South Africa.
Future innovation
We are interested in problems that affect South Africans every day but are usually approached separately by different sectors — where research, technology and community participation have to meet.
Digital tools that help address language barriers within universities and other public-facing institutions, including multilingual access to information and services — with a focus on accessibility, inclusion and making institutional information easier to understand.
Community-powered environmental technology addressing air pollution, particularly in Gauteng. Concepts under exploration include community air-quality reporting, accessible pollution information, neighbourhood-level environmental data, public awareness tools, visualisation of pollution patterns, and connecting communities with environmental institutions.
The purpose is to turn environmental data into information that ordinary people can understand and use.
Platforms that allow communities, researchers and young innovators to identify problems and propose technology-driven solutions.
